A Visit from the Senator

So I have tried not to blog about my class and my students, but I can't help myself this week. This past Thursday we were honored to have Senator Trent Lott visit our school. As most of you know we are non-profit and are always looking for more financial help so that we can serve more hearing impaired and language impaired children in MS. I knew my classroom was on the schedule for the Senator to visit, but I did not expect what happened. I had my well planned activity ready to show him how amazing my students were, but that is not at all what happened. The Senator walked right in and starting talking to my kids and they talked back to him!! They all jumped up and gathered around him as if their own grandpa had walked in to visit. As you can see in the picture he really loved my sweet 2 year old who he asked if he could pick up. As you can also see in the picture my other two little profoundly deaf girls are talking to each other and checking out the Senator's entourage which are behind the camera. What you can't see is that right after this picture one of my little boys went and picked up a dinosaur we had been playing with and attacked the Senator with it - all in fun of course! Then the Senator showed my students a picture of his own grandchildren. They just loved him. I was so glad because often they just clam up and won't say anything. So Senator Lott if you ever see this - You can come play with us anytime! And to the rest of you - You can come visit us, too!!! I know that a lot of you probably think that profoundly deaf kids can't really learn to talk, but they can! With today's technology and the right rehabilitation from birth to 3 years 90% of all hearing impaired children will be able to go into regular education by 5 or 6 years old. Forget what you have seen in the past, this is 2007 and deaf kids can learn to talk and listen!!! Okay so enough of my soap box about what I do, but really all of you need to come to see for yourself! I promised you'll be amazed - I am everyday!!!

I am sooo excited to see that Magnolia is getting the attention it deserves. I so hope they get some funding. It is great to see how the Lord worked out the tour with the Senator. You never know how those tours will go.
